ABOUT THE PLAN

It stands to reason. If it takes fifteen minutes instead of one to two hours some weekends to drive from Muizenberg to Kalk Bay, more visitors will come.  The idea is to divert through traffic onto Boyes Drive which bypasses the central part of Kalk Bay, and to turn Kalk Bay into a people-friendly destination *

* In a series of late night email exchanges with architect Etienne Brouwer, 'pedestrian-friendly' emerged as a better overall term than 'car free' . It suggests a zone in which cars and pedestrians can comfortably mix. It includes shared zones in which cars travel slowly and give right of way to pedestrians. as well as car-free zones. Pavements and roads can be unified creating a sense of place.
